Rewiring the Brain

I wrote several weeks ago about a man who suffered a traumatic brain injury during an attack six years ago and suffered severe head trauma as a result. This man’s diagnosis was less than positive to friends and family members who have been taking care of him as a result. Researchers chose this man to receive an experimental treatment where electrodes are placed deep inside the brain to increase stimulation, and open "drive" paths that will more easily allow messages to flow in the brain.

This new treatment, known as deep-brain stimulation (DBS), is helping people suffering who suffer in similar situations. While this is not a miracle cure, and it is not able to bring people back to the level they were before their accident, DBS is giving TBI patients a new hope and a huge step towards recovery. I found an article about DBS in TIME magazine recently, which goes into great detail about DBS and the current research being done to expand this treatment.
