Panel Advances VA Medical Care Measure

A Senate panel approved a new initiative yesterday that would increase counseling and brain screenings for soldiers returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan, and would also reduce the red tape wounded soldiers had to go through in order to receive medical attention and treatment from Veteran Affairs facilities throughout the country.

The initiative will now move to the Senate floor for another round of voting. This is the first bill, since the increased attention over the past several weeks, which would finally begin to correct the many flaws in the care and treatment of returning soldiers. The bill is being sponsored by over 30 senators, three of which are presidential candidates, and two senate committees.

I think this bill would be a huge step in the creation of a more unified system for our service men and women. Regardless of what has happened in the past, we need to look forward and increase the attention paid to those men and women who have given their lives to protect ours. I think this bill will really begin to shed light on the weak areas, and increase the support these men and women deserve.
