North American Brain Injury Society Medical and Legal Conference
I just returned from attending the North American Brain Injury Society‘s (NABIS) medical and legal conferences held in Miami, Florida this past weekend. I was very privileged to be invited to give one of the plenary session presentations on the opening day. My topic was Cutting Edge Legal Issues in Brain Injury and it was a pleasure to speak not only to those attorneys present but to the numerous physicians, neuropsychologists, rehabilitation specialists and other medical providers that were in the audience.
The conference opened with an outstanding two-and-a-half hour presentation by Erin Bigler, Ph.D. who shared with us the new developments in the field of neuroimaging. It was interesting to look at early CT scans and compare them with today’s modern neuroimaging techniques. Science has certainly come a long way in being able to image the brain.
Besides my plenary presentation there were four other plenary presentations. The first by Gene Langlois, Sc.D. from the Centers for Disease Control. Dr. Langlois was followed by Douglas Katz, M.D. who provided a comprehensive medical overview of brain injury. Dr. Robert Voogt, Chairman of NABIS, discussed putting the heart and soul into brain injury rehabilitation and discussed the work he is doing in this area. Following my presentation, Mickey Collins, Ph.D. discussed the recent research and clinical application that he and his colleagues in Pittsburgh are conducting with regard to the management of sports concussion.
After the first day, the conference broke down into different tracks which included sports medicine, blasting injuries, rehabilitation and legal issues. As treasurer of NABIS and as the chair of the legal tract, I would like to thank all of the presenters, both medical and legal for their time, energy and enthusiasm in making this a most successful brain injury conference.
I look forward to seeing everyone next year in Austin, Texas.
