NABIS Legal Brain Injury Conference
I recently returned from a successful and excellent medical/legal brain injury conference in San Antonio, Texas sponsored by the North America Brain Injury Society (NABIS). As I stated in earlier blogs, I had the pleasure of being named chairman of the legal program at this conference. Over the past few days, I gave two legal presentations, one on admissibility of expert testimony (Daubert issues) and one on cross-examination of experts. I also co-moderated the two and a half day program.
Running along side the legal program was a medical program attended by more than 350 professionals in all spheres of brain injury rehabilitation.
One exciting development was the recent creation of the Brain Injury Institute whose mission is to assist in research and treatment of our injured soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Almost 100 military personnel attended this conference. Most startling was a comment of a military physician stationed in Germany who stated that she is seeing more than 100 soldiers a week, who, when screened, show positive signs of traumatic brain injury.
Everyone is already looking forward to next year’s conference in Chicago. Also in the planning is a Blast Injury Institute meeting in Washington, D.C. on November 2 and 3. Details for this will follow in the near future.
