Doctor Speaks on Concussion Safety

I read something recently in the Orion Online that I wanted to share with you. David Lechuga, Ph.D., spoke to parents, athletes and coaches at the Enloe Conference Center on Sept. 20 at California University to make them aware of how concussions affect high school athletes if not properly treated. Dr. Lechuga introduced the ImPACT test (Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing). His idea would be to give this test to all athletes at the beginning of a season and then give it again if it is suspected that an athlete has suffered a concussion. A program such as this could make sports safer for athletes and insure that they are not sent back on to the playing field too soon. I thought it was very interesting and it ties into the other posts I’ve done on sports-related brain injuries. You can read more about Dr. Lechuga’s findings here.
