Common Gene May Increase Risk of Mental Illness

Yesterday at a NIH lecture, Daniel R. Weinberger, M.D, explained how a common version of a gene shapes the efficiency of the brain’s prefrontal cortex hub of “executive” functions like reasoning, planning and impulse control and increases risk for mental illness. The information was presented at the G. Burroughs Mider Lecture, “Complex Genetics in the Human Brain: Lessons from COMT” at The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. If you were unable to attend, you can view the lecture as a videocast .
