Brain Injury May Occur Within Millisecond After Head Hits Car Windshield
Researchers from Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center have discovered the brain injury may occur within one millisecond of a person’s head hitting a car windshield as the result of an accident.
In the study, the researchers modeled early-time wave interactions in the human head following impact with a windshield, with one scenario leading to the onset of TBI. They learned that different types of cell damage occurred depending on the type of stress suffered by the brain. This information can be very useful in diagnoses and prevention of TBI.
