Amateur Boxers May Incur Brain Injuries, Researchers Find

A recent study of amateur boxers has found evidence of increased risk of brain trauma, contrary to popular belief that because they wear protective headgear, unlike professional boxers, they are safe from common injuries associated with the sport. New studies are finding that while the currently used protective headgear and shock-absorbing gloves puts amateur boxers at lower risk, their heads are still not protected enough to ensure no permanent damage is suffered.

While many argue that at the amateur level participants are safe and do not suffer any major injuries, new studies continue to contradict these statements. Comparisons between boxers and other athletes, such as soccer and track and field athletes, do not show major differences during MRIs, however, the boxers did produce significantly lower scores in a finger-tap assessment, which generally indicates some sort of brain dysfunction.
