Alzheimer’s Cases to Quadruple by 2050
Currently, more than 26 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease. As if this statistic wasn’t alarming enough, a new study expects this number to jump to more than 106 million people by the year 2050.
Because Alzheimer’s Disease primarily affects people ages 65 and older, and the fact that life expectancies are on the rise, the significant increase in people suffering from the disease is likely to quadruple in the near future. Lead author of the study, Ron Brookmeyer of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, believes there will be a global epidemic of Alzheimer’s Disease in the next few decades.
Brookmeyer urges people to be more aware of this increasing epidemic, and advises people to take the necessary steps to prevent Alzheimer’s before it starts.
