Adult Stem Cells Can Produce Brain Cells
There has been an exciting new advance in stem cell research and the potential benefits for people with brain injuries. In recent experiments involving chicken eggs, researches watched as adult human stem cells developed into functioning brain cells. Experts hope that someday adult stem cells from the patient’s own bone marrow may be used to regrow and replace brain or spinal cord cells which were damaged by injury or disease.
The findings of this study appear in this week’s issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. If you would rather read the less technical overview of the study, you can access the ABC News report here.
This report brings us one step closer to understanding the potential stem cells have in curing disease and alleviating injury.
I am proud to say that New Jersey is a state which is proactive in embracing and supporting stem cell research. I have attached some links to recent articles about what is taking place in New Jersey for your review. You can access the articles here and here .

I have a daughter who is 32 years old and 15 years post traumatic brain injury. She suffers short-term memory loss, impaired judgement and speech difficulties. Is there any hope out there. Her injury was mainly to the Thalamus area of the brain. Thanks.

I take care of a family member that’s in the final stage of Parkinson’s, so I’m really hoping stem cells lead to some big advances soon. I know the advances probably won’t come in time to help in my situation, but because I’ve seen how these brain diseases can devestate the person affected as well as their family, I really don’t want other people to have to experience it.

My daughter who was just 3 months old during a car accident sustained a brain injury. Now she’s 7 years old and although has recovered miraculously, still falls short of being termed as normal. Does the future hold anything encouraging for her in terms of stem cell therapy?

Our 17-year old daughter is 15 months post TBI (DAI from a car wreck) and is in a minimally responsive condition. She is not talking or moving much. She can communicate her some by moaning sounds and she does laugh and smile appropriately. We have done all we know to do (Baclofen pump, medications, nutrition supplements…) Who is the top researcher/rehab doctor who might help us? What about Deep Brain Stimulation or adult stem cell implantation for her? Thank you for any direction you may give.

I am the grandfather of Patricio Villegas, (11 years old) who in 3 June 2005 suffered an accident of traffic (in Buenos Aires City), in consequence of which he result with injury in the basal ganglia and, consequently, severe difficulties in the movement and in the speech. ( Severe spastic-dystonic cuadriparesia).
With the purpose of exploring possibilities of therapys that permit some degree of improvement in the motion of Patricio, I have consulted in my country important professionals
All the therapy advised they, coincided in doing routines of
Phisical Therapy (kinesiology)
Occupational Therapy
Speach and Hearing Therapy (Fonoadiologia)
Neuropsychology
With supervision by the neurologist that attends him (now Dra. Silvia Intruvini).
With only the exception of one professional, all the others minimized the possibilities of cellular therapy .
( One Dr. estimated that an implant of autologous adult stem cell would be able to be considered, but the results are uncertain).
I have explored the medical experiences published upon the employment of autologous adult stem cell and I have notified that several practices with good success have been carried out, in general about spinal cord lession, (i.e. Dr. LIMA (Portugal), not thus in the central nervous system .
It has encouraged me to consult if there has been progresses in similar experiences, or if you consider that some scientific possibility exists now of applying some alternative therapy to my grandson, without additional risks.
Now, Patricio use lower an upper limb valves, and posture chair for transportation.
He has right arm and right leg voluntary motion.
He maintain the communication with us using the computer and keyboard.
The memory and cognition are well.
Thank you, and excuse me again by the boldness

I am the mother of a 6 year old son who suffered a traumatic brain injury on the 21st of Jan. 2006. There was an accidental shooting and he was struck in the left side of his head and the bullet exited through the right side of his head. Although it is a miracle he’s still here, he still has severe neurological problems. The bullet damaged both sides of his frontal lobe and doctors said he wouldn’t make it, but he did. He is about 9 months out from the injury and making remarkable progress. Hes stating to recognize different people following simple commands. He is fed by a G-tube and is on several medications such as Baclofen, Clonadine, and Neurontin to name a few. We are looking for any and all opinions on what the next step would be to further his recovery process. I would love to hear from anyone with similar stories or just some advice. aprilaustin42182@yahoo.com
